About
GET TO KNOW TROOP 4
Troop 4 is a very active Troop in Western North Carolina. We put the Outing in Scouting which keeps the youth engaged. We plan at least one weekend and one day trip each month. Additionally, we attend Summer Camp and regional Merit Badge Weekends. The Scouts plan activities such as camping, backpacking, biking, caving, canoeing, rafting, ziplining, and much more. We are active 12m out of the year with breaks around the school calendar. Troop 4 is 100% volunteer supported, and our adult leaders are trained with decades of experience leading Youth. We are ALWAYS open for more help, insights, suggestions, and fresh ideas. We want/need parents to volunteer and be involved.
Goals for our Scouts
(aside from having safe fun on a pathway to Eagle Scout)
(aside from having safe fun on a pathway to Eagle Scout)
Build confidence.
Develop personal responsibility.
Master interpersonal relationships.
95% of youth that join Scouting don’t reach the rank of Eagle Scout and that’s ok. We’d like 100% of Troop 4 to achieve the goals above, have fun, and leave Scouting as a better person.
How are we going to do this?
Scouting is “youth led” with adult leaders functioning as the “guard rails”. This will be a transition for both Scouts and Parents as they shift from a Cub Scout mentality.
Scouts will be empowered to make decisions and have a voice within the Troop.
Scouts will make and learn from mistakes as well as each other.
The Patrol methodology allows for youth leadership and critical thinking.
A key question to their questions will be “Have you utilized all of your available resources?” We want to empower the Scouts to find the answers to their questions without spoon feeding them.
Troop 4 has a corporate structure for leadership.
TROOP STRUCTURE
The Scoutmaster serves as a “CEO” implementing the program laid out by the Troop’s Committee “Board of Directors”. The Committee is comprised of parents and friends of the Troop working together to provide the oversight and support for a successful program.
Registered and trained adult leaders help guide the Troop.
Scouts work in Patrols consisting for 5-10 boys in similar age groups.
Patrols have their own leadership structure so that they can take ownership of the program. All Scouts will have the opportunity for leadership in one way or another.
Each Patrol will have an Assistant Scoutmaster working with them. They assist with programing but also help keep the “pulse” of the patrol and make sure they are staying on track. Assistant Scoutmasters report back to the Scoutmaster with any opportunities or concerns.
